Our Hair Feels Like Flower Petals
"Bertram’s choreography never disappoints…”
-Ashley Gibson for Into the proscenium
Our Hair Feels Like Flower Petals premiered on Juneteenth 2021 at The Movement Lab in Atlanta, GA. Originally developed during the Dance Canvas 2020 Choreographic Residency at the Atlanta Contemporary Museum, this contemporary duet featured two black women and investigates their resilience during this trying climate in America. With the support of Idea Capital, Jessica expanded this original piece of 12 minute duration into an evening length production and artist talk back with four dancers. Not just a performance, Our Hair Feels Like Flower Petals became a community event which included a successful preview party and open class series at the Hambidge Cross-Pollination Art Lab through Dance Hub ATL
The choreographic process researched how black women move forward, how they rebuild the communities in which they occupy, and how they heal themselves mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Through set design and music composition, Jessica provided the audience with the unique opportunity to view the internal and external forces that drive black women. Our Hair Feels Like Flower Petals provided healing and much needed representation for black women. The completed work was presented over multiple performances to several sold out audiences. There was also a virtual premiere.
Mini May Masterclasses
The mini May class series featured local Black movement artists in Atlanta and was hosted at The Hambidge Cross Pollination Art Lab, where Jessica was an artist-in-residence with Dance Hub ATL.
Preview Party
This evening featured pop up performances of the work in progress, a live DJ, visual art, photo wall, interactive art collage, drinks and more! It also included local vendors.
